KaysRepairer/Fixer Upper
Ever since I was a teenager I always enjoyed taking things apart and figuring out how they work. Fresh out of college, I got a gig at a recording studio where, among other things, I shadowed one of the maintenance techs. This proved to be an incredible experience that set me on the path of repairing and maintaining all of my gear. I have always had a knack for troubleshooting, and being a musician myself, being able to figure out why something was not working properly helped me keep my studio in tip top shape. A bunch of years and many repairs later, I thought it was the right time to offer my skills to the rest of the world. I have successfully serviced and repaired a lot of vintage synthesizers and more than a few pieces of audio equipment. I am dedicated to figuring out why something is not working properly, and I always treat all of my repairs as if they were for my own gear.
LABSWhere the Magic Happens!
The lab's core is comprised of my trusted oscilloscope and multimeters. I have a substantial inventory of spare parts, and know where to source parts that I don't have. Understanding the architecture of vintage gear is a must, but ultimately every synth is different, presenting unique challenges as well as rewards. KaysLABS is an 100% indie repair shop, and not an official manufacturer service center. In the unlikely event that your equipment is still under warranty I would encourage you to contact the manufacturer who can connect you with an official repair center. Please read through the FAQ section below for more information on my repair process and policies and contact me with any questions.
I charge an extremely competitive $75/hour with a minimum 1-hour bench fee. Sorry no pro-rating, but trust me, I count my hours so that the client always comes out on top.
I can't give you an estimate before I start digging into your synth to figure out what's wrong with it. If you have a spending cutoff for the repair, it is your responsibility to inform me about this BEFORE I begin working on your synth so that I can let you know if this is reasonable or not.
Your synth will be serviced in the order that it has come in and you will be notified upon completion of the repair to arrange for pickup. The typical service turnaround time is about 4 weeks, but every repair is different and some repairs might take longer if I need to order special parts from overseas.
Yes, I offer a 30 day, non-transferrable, parts and labor warranty from the date of pickup. If you have a problem with your repair, you must contact me within 7 days to arrange for a follow-up evaluation. KaysLABS can not be responsible for user abuse, misuse, or unfamiliarity of repaired equipment, therefore additional repair fees may apply.
Unfortunately no. Starting from the mid-90's manufacturers stopped providing access to schematics, parts and other necessary information for the repair and maintenance of their products.
I'm usually pretty slammed repairing synths and I can not offer technical phone support.
I will make my best efforts to keep your synth presets in memory, but I can not guarantee that they won't be erased. I highly recommend that you make a backup of all your presets before you drop the synth off for repair.
It takes just as long to diagnose and repair a $200 synth as a $20,000 one. The cost to repair it has nothing to do with the value of your synth and has everything to do with how long it takes me to fix it.
All repairs are typically done on a first-come-first-serve basis, but I offer rush fees for my repairs with a surcharge of 30% of the total invoice for priority status, and 50% of the total invoice for week-end/holiday repair.
All repairs must be picked up within two weeks of the notification of completed work as I don't have the storage space to keep your synth longer than that. Any equipment left more than two weeks will be subject to a $10/day storage fee. Any equipment left beyond 30 days of my notification of completion becomes my property.
Glad you asked -- payment in full is due at the time of equipment pickup. No equipment will be allowed to leave the shop without full payment. At this time I accept Cash, Zelle or Paypal.
It depends. If I can locate the schematics and the manufacturer has good documentation on the synth and a service manual, I can probably fix it. Without schematics or a service manual the best that I can do is open it up and see if there is something obviously broken. Please note that even if I can't repair it, you will still have to pay the minimum bench fee of $75.
All clients must schedule an appointment prior to arriving for pickups or drop offs. Please don't show up without prior notification of your arrival. Your punctuality and consideration is appreciated.
It depends. If this is a mod kit then yes. If this is a specific replacement knob, switch cover, or fader that you would like to use then yes. Otherwise all other electronic components needed for the repair are to be purchased through KaysLABS.
Once again it depends on the available technical documentation and the complexity of the device. Contact me and let's chat about it.
Yes, with the same caveat that it depends on the available documentation. While technically modular synths have similarities, there are also some subtle but noticeable differences that can make diagnosing an issue more complicated than it might seem.
Maybe. Send me an e-mail with all the info and I'll take a look at it and get back to you ASAP.
